THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR IPHONE 3G ONLY. YOU
MUST HAVE ITUNES 9.2 INSTALLED WHEN FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
How to use these instructions.
Upgrading to 4.0 is a simple multi-step process. You must follow
each step in order.
If possible please Sync your iPhone with iTunes before starting
these instructions, as your data WILL be wiped off of the iPhone. You will get the data and settings back
if you have sync ʼd
your contacts, email, photos etc before you start.
As you will be wiping the iPhone, any applications you downloaded
onto the iPhone will be removed but the Apple App store applications can be downloaded for free
again if you have downloaded them previously.
BEFORE YOU START
If when starting your computer you did not have to select a user
and enter a password
do not continue with these instructions.
For these instructions to work your account must
have Administrator permissions on your computer and you must have entered a
password.

Unlocking and upgrading iPhone 3G to 4.0 (5 Steps)
Step 1.
Download the custom firmware file below.
(remember where you save the file)
When the file have
downloaded check its sizes match the following:
3G_ONLY_4.0_Custom_Restore.ipsw should be
approximately 306 MB
*If the file
above gets saved as a ".zip" file, DO
NOT extract the folder. You need to rename the
".zip" extension to ".ipsw",

If you seem to have problems downloading the file
as it's
quite large, try clearing your internet cache before downloading or consider using a download manager
and the Firefox web browser.

Step 2.
Connect your iPhone to the computer using a cable not the
Docking Device.
and put your iPhone in
Recovery Mode
Step 3.
iTunes will detect an iPhone in
recovery mode, and asks you to restore it.
Hold down the Shift on
your keyboard, and Click "Restore"
If you do this correctly you will be asked to select a file to
open. If you get anything else click cancel and start Step 3 again
Step 4.
In the pop up window that appears navigate to where you
downloaded the file (in step 1) and select it
3G_ONLY_4.0_Custom_Restore.ipsw
and click open
NOTE: This may take 15-20 minutes depending on the condition of
your iphone PLEASE BE VERY PATIENT DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR IPHONE
DO NOT TOUCH YOUR IPHONE UNTIL YOU SEE THE HOME SCREEN WITH ALL THE ICONS OR YOU ENCOUNTER AN ERROR MESSAGE
If you get an error message on iTunes during the restore
process.

Step 5.
IMPORTANT:
You need to have
your iPhone
connected to the
internet when
proceeding with the
steps below. (WiFi
would be the best
option)
If you have a PIN
code lock on your
sim card, you should
remove it before
proceeding.
T-Mobile USA
users and any
users on NON-3G
networks should
disable 3G
before
proceeding:
Settings -->
General -->
Network -->
Enable 3G (OFF)

Open
"Cydia"
from your iPhone
Home screen
(usually on 2nd
screen)
-
Go
to
"Search"
- the 1st icon
from the bottom
right
-
Type
"ultrasn0w"
in the search
bar
Note that the
"0" in
"Ultrasn0w" is
the number ZERO,
not the letter
O.

once the
ultrasn0w
application
appears, click
on it and then
click
"Install"
on the top right
corner, click
"confirm"
-
After the
application is
installed,
Restart your
iPhone
-
That's it.. your
iPhone 3G should
be now Unlocked.
When the unlock has completed you will see your home screen on
the iPhone with all of the icons. In iTunes you will be asked to choose between setting up your
iPhone as a new iPhone or to restore your iPhone from a backup.
We recommend that you set up your iPhone as a new iPhone. You
will be given the option to resync all of your contacts and applications back to
the iPhone on the following screen. |
