JailBreak the 3G iPhone to 2.2 Firmware (4 Steps)

MAC USERS MUST NOT USE SAFARI WHEN DOWNLOADING THE FILES DETAILED IN THIS DOCUMENT AS SAFARI CHANGES THE FILES. PLEASE USE FIREFOX FOR THE DOWNLOAD.

IMPORTANT NOTE: THE FOLLOWING ASSUMES THAT YOU HAVE UPGRADED TO ITUNES 8.0 AND YOUR IPHONE IS POWERED OFF AND NOT CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER

Step 1.

Download the 2 files below and save them in one folder. When the files have downloaded check that their sizes match the following:

3G_2.2_Custom_Restore_Unactivated.ipsw  should be approximately 236MB

x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw should be approximately 34KB

*If any of the files above gets saved as a ".zip" file, you need to rename the ".zip" extension to ".ipsw", If you don't know how to do that click here, or simply use Firefox Browser. You can download Firefox browser here

If you seem to have problems downloading the files as they are quite large try clearing your internet cache before downloading or consider using a download manager and the Firefox web browser.

FireFox Web Browser http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Download Manager http://www.tucows.com/preview/403978

Step 2.

Connect your iPhone to the computer using a cable not the Docking Device. Wait for any pop up messages to appear in iTunes and close them. You should now be presented with a summary screen with an update/restore button displayed.
*If you can't see the update/restore button, you will need to force your iphone into recovery mode.
To do that hold the "Home" button and the "power" button at the same time for about 30 seconds while your phone is connected to the computer until iTunes detects your iphone in recovery mode.

Step 3.

You will now see a screen with an iPhone called the “Summary”

Windows users: Hold down the Shift and Click "Restore"
Mac users: Hold down ALT and click "Restore"

If you do this correctly you will be asked to select a file to open. If you get anything else click cancel and start Step 3 again

Step 4.

In the pop up window that appears navigate to where you downloaded the files and select the file called

3G_2.2_Custom_Restore_Unactivated.ipsw and click open

NOTE: This may take 15-20 minutes depending on the condition of your iphone PLEASE BE VERY PATIENT DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR IPHONE.

DO NOT TOUCH YOUR IPHONE UNTIL YOU SEE THE HOME SCREEN WITH ALL THE ICONS OR YOU ENCOUNTER AN ERROR MESSAGE. THE IPHONE WILL DISPLAY A USB SYMBOL FOR A WHILE UNTIL IT HAS ACTIVATED IN iTunes 8.0 THIS IS NORMAL.

When the unlock has completed you will see your home screen on the iPhone with all of the icons. In iTunes you will be asked to choose between setting up your iPhone as a new iPhone or to restore your iPhone from a backup.
We recommend that you set up your iPhone as a new iPhone. You will be given the option to resync allof your contacts and applications back to the iPhone on the following screen.
